ETCH MARK
OR STAIN?

What are Etch Marks?

Etch marks are chemical burns that occur when an acidic substance is spilled on marble countertops that creates a reaction with the calcium carbonate that is present in marble. Some of these substances are citrus juices, vinegar, soda, most detergents, and bleach. Since etch marks are chemical burns, to remove them from the stone, the resurfacing process is necessary. This includes honing the stone, polishing it, and then sealing it.

How do I identify an Etch Mark?
When you spill an acidic substance on your marble countertop, and leave it, this will create a visible mark in the form of drops or rings, erasing the finish of the countertop (if you have a satin or high-gloss finish) and leaving the surface rough to the touch. Sometimes when you have dark marble like Nero Marquina, Emperador, or Rojo Alicante, these etch marks will appear white in color.

How do I prevent etching?
You have to be mindful that any liquid with a low or high acid content that is spilled and not cleaned right away, will create an etch mark. Be careful to not spill this type of liquid when you are cooking and if you are going to set it on your countertop, place something under the jar or container. In the case of a spill, clean it up as soon as possible and apply a neutral cleaner to neutralize any acidic residue.

STAINS

What is a Stain?
A stain is a discoloration on an unsealed stone that occurs when residue is left by a substance and has penetrated the stone. Most stains can be removed with a stain remover product, sometimes it requires several applications to completely remove a stain.

How do I identify a Stain?
Stains are different than etch marks, because they penetrate the stone and if the liquid has color, you will see that color deep in the stone or the stone can look wet. In both cases you will see a change in the color of the stone. Stains will not necessarily burn the countertop, for example, if you have an oil stain, you will see a wet area where the stain is, but there will still be a shine on the surface.
Removing stains is different than removing etch marks. To remove stains, stain remover product must be applied and this normally requires more than one application. To remove etch marks, the area needs to be honed (sanded) and repolished.
How do I prevent Stains?
The best way to prevent stains is by protecting your stone! Make sure to have your stone sealed properly, this keeps it from absorbing substances. It is also important to clean up spills immediately, protect your countertop while cooking, and use the correct cleaners! Be careful with substances like coffee, cooking oils, wine, sodas, and fizzy drinks. Make sure to dry around the sink as this area is prone to rust stains.
